League Rules
9 Pin No-Tap is a fun bowling format where knocking down 9 pins on the first ball counts as a strike. Scoring is identical to standard 10-pin bowling, but scores are typically higher, with 300 games being easier to achieve.
Here are the key rules for 9 Pin No-Tap leagues:
Core Gameplay & Scoring
- The “Tap” Rule: If you knock down 9 or 10 pins on your first ball, it is scored as a strike.
- Leaving a Pin: If you leave 1 or more pins standing (specifically 8 or fewer on the first ball), you shoot for a spare as normal.
- Scoring: Standard 10-pin scoring applies.
- Game Structure: Leagues usually consist of 2 or 3 games per night.
League Structure & Variations
- Handicaps: Leagues often use handicaps to level the playing field, such as 100% of 410 for doubles.
Team Size: Often 3-5 players, but some, like the OSSO Sports and Social league, require a minimum of 6 on a roster. - “Suicide” Variation: In some variations, hitting all 10 pins counts as 0 points (gutter), meaning only 9 pins counts as a strike.
- Progression: Some leagues have a “strike pot” where special rules apply, such as Kent Bowl’s 9-pin rules for extra prizes.
Common League Procedures
- Late Bowlers: Generally allowed to catch up, starting in the current frame.
- Finality: Unlike traditional 9-pin (a European style), this version usually uses automatic pinsetters and scoring.
- Substitute Policy: Rules regarding subs should be verified with the local league secretary.
